Ross Procedure (Pulmonary Autograft for Aortic Valve Replacement). Dr Mustafa Bilge Erdogan. ISU Liv Hospital Bahcesehir
Restore your heart's natural rhythm with the Ross procedure!
Aortic stenosis or aortic valve insufficiency can significantly reduce the quality of your life. But now, you have the opportunity to change this with the Ross procedure — an innovative surgical method that allows you to replace the damaged aortic valve with your own pulmonary valve. This eliminates the need for an artificial valve and lifelong anticoagulant therapy.
The Ross procedure, also known as pulmonary artery autotransplantation for aortic valve replacement, involves replacing the damaged aortic valve with the patient's own pulmonary valve, avoiding the use of an artificial valve. Then, a homograft (donor valve) or bioprosthesis is placed in the position of the pulmonary valve. This eliminates the need for lifelong anticoagulant therapy required with mechanical valves.
Why choose the Ross procedure?
- Using the patient's own pulmonary valve ensures better hemodynamics and durability
- Patients do not require lifelong anticoagulant therapy, reducing the risk of bleeding and thrombosis
- Patients often report an improved quality of life due to the absence of the need for constant anticoagulant intake
- The pulmonary valve usually lasts longer than artificial valves, especially in younger patients
The Ross procedure may be recommended for patients with
- Aortic stenosis or aortic valve insufficiency
- Younger age (usually under 50), as the pulmonary valve in younger patients has higher durability
- No contraindications for surgical intervention
Preparation and conducting the Ross procedure
Before the procedure, patients undergo thorough examinations, including blood tests, ECG, echocardiography, and other diagnostic tests. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision in the chest (sternotomy) and removes the damaged aortic valve. Then, the patient's own pulmonary valve is moved to the position of the aortic valve. A homograft or bioprosthesis is placed in the position of the pulmonary valve.
After the procedure, patients usually stay in the hospital under observation. It is recommended to avoid physical activity and heavy lifting for several weeks. Regular visits to the doctor for monitoring the heart condition are also important.
Like any surgical procedure, the Ross procedure has its risks, including
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Damage to neighboring organs
- The need to switch to open surgery in case of complications
- The risk of repeat surgery in the future if the pulmonary valve wears out
The Ross procedure offers many advantages, including the use of a natural valve, the absence of the need for anticoagulants, and improved quality of life. However, it is important to discuss all possible risks and benefits with your doctor before deciding to undergo such surgery.
