Coronary Angiogram. Dr Hasan Turhan. ISU Liv Hospital Bahcesehir

Coronary angiography (CAG): Caring for your heart!

Coronary angiography (CAG) is a diagnostic procedure that allows visualization of the condition of the coronary arteries of the heart. These arteries supply the heart muscle with oxygen and nutrients, and their condition is critically important for the normal functioning of the heart.

Coronary angiography is performed using an X-ray machine and a contrast agent that is introduced through a catheter into the arteries. The contrast agent makes the arteries visible on X-ray images, allowing the doctor to assess their condition, detect narrowing or blockages, and determine the presence of atherosclerotic plaques.

Coronary angiography is recommended for

  • Individuals suspected of having coronary artery disease (CAD)
  • Patients with chronic angina
  • Those preparing for heart surgery
  • Individuals who have had a myocardial infarction
  • Patients undergoing evaluation of treatment effectiveness after stenting or bypass surgery

If you exhibit the following signs, it is an indication for CAG

  • Suspicion of coronary artery disease (CAD)
  • Chronic angina
  • Assessment of artery condition before planned surgery
  • Diagnosis after myocardial infarction
  • Evaluation of treatment effectiveness after stenting or bypass surgery

Heart surgery requires special preparation and a carefully planned operation plan.

Before the procedure, the patient undergoes a preliminary examination, including blood tests, ECG, and other necessary tests. The patient may be advised to stop taking certain medications a few days before the procedure. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, making it painless for the patient. A catheter is inserted through a small incision in the groin or wrist area and advanced to the heart under X-ray control. Through the catheter, a contrast agent is introduced, making the arteries visible on X-ray images.

The doctor takes a series of X-ray images that allow the condition of the coronary arteries to be assessed. After the imaging is complete, the catheter is removed, and the insertion site is closed with a bandage. The patient remains under observation for several hours.

Benefits of CAG

  • High diagnostic accuracy
  • Possibility of immediate treatment (e.g., stenting) upon detection of narrowing
  • Minimal invasiveness compared to open surgical procedures

Coronary angiography is the gold standard in the diagnosis of coronary artery diseases. It allows doctors to accurately assess the condition of the arteries and make informed decisions about further treatment. If you suspect heart problems, discuss the need for CAG with your doctor.
