Balloon Angioplasty of Coronary Artery. Dr Hasan Turhan. ISU Liv Hospital Bahcesehir
Regain your health and activity with coronary artery balloon angioplasty!
Your heart deserves the best care!
Ischemic heart disease and angina can significantly reduce the quality of your life, causing chest pain, shortness of breath, and fatigue. But now you have the opportunity to change that with coronary artery balloon angioplasty — a modern and effective procedure that will help you regain your health and activity.
Coronary artery balloon angioplasty, also known as percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA), is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries. These arteries supply blood to the heart, and their narrowing can lead to ischemic heart disease, angina, or myocardial infarction.
Key steps of the procedure
The patient usually receives local anesthesia and sedatives. A catheter is inserted through an artery in the groin, wrist, or elbow area. Contrast dye is injected through the catheter, allowing the doctor to see the arteries on an X-ray image. The location and degree of artery narrowing are determined. A thin guidewire is inserted through the catheter and passes through the narrowed section of the artery. A catheter with a balloon at the tip is guided along the wire. The balloon is inflated, expanding the narrowed section of the artery. The balloon remains inflated for several seconds, then is deflated and removed. In some cases, a stent — a small metal tube — is placed to keep the artery open. The catheter and guidewire are removed. The catheter insertion site is closed and treated to prevent bleeding.
Benefits of balloon angioplasty
- Minimally invasive: The procedure is less traumatic compared to open surgical interventions
- Quick recovery: Patients usually return to normal life within a few days
- Effectiveness: The procedure can significantly improve blood flow to the heart and reduce symptoms of ischemic heart disease
Balloon angioplasty is an important method for treating coronary artery disease, but the decision to perform it should be made by a doctor based on the individual characteristics of the patient.
